Maine Coons in the Redwood Forest

A very small cattery, an Italian bloodline, and a house full of enormous cats who think they are people.

Our cats came from Italy. We came to the redwoods.

The Maine Coon is an American breed. It started in Maine, went to Europe decades later, and Italian breeders carried it in their own direction. Ours came back from that line: heavier bone, a broader muzzle, a wilder face, and a cat far softer than the face suggests.

They live here with us in Humboldt County, in the forest, in the house. On the chairs, on the beds, and underneath whatever we are trying to do.

The Household

Medici

Medici

Our king. Italian import lines, and every bit as large as he looks.

Ross

Ross

A tortie who will tell you exactly what she thinks, then fall asleep on you.

Margherita

Margherita

The quiet one. Watches everything, misses nothing.

Weeks Two to Seven

The Window That Closes

A kitten figures out whether human beings are safe between roughly two and seven weeks old. After that the door closes, and no amount of patience later fully reopens it. All of it happens before a kitten is anywhere near old enough to leave.

Ours are handled every day from the first week, in a house with our own dogs wandering through, a Great Dane and a Border Collie among them. A kitten raised around a Great Dane is not easily rattled by anything else.

Health Testing

Every cat we breed is DNA tested. Our king is clear by direct test for HCM, SMA and PKDef, our queens clear for HCM and PKDef and clear for SMA by parentage, and all three negative for FIV and FeLV.

We will show anyone the paperwork.
